#7 Tales of Berseria

The “
Tales of” series of JRPG's is a series of games that I hold near and dear to my heart. I'm a sucker for JRPG's in general, but the
Tales series hits me on the same level as
Final Fantasy and
Persona; meaning the hype level is over 9000 as each new release approaches. There are quite a lot of games in the
Tales series and
Berseria is the best of them all. It features a much darker tone than any of the games that came before it. The protagonist, Velvet Crowe, is a woman bent on vengeance and after a man who has taken everything from her. You essentially play as the “bad guys” in
Berseria and it's a much welcome change of pace. It's definitely not the usual happy-go-lucky and cheery story that
Tales fans are accustomed to. The entire cast of characters was likable. Each and every one of them got time to shine during the story and usual dialogue skits. Speaking of those series defining skits,
Berseria's are probably the funniest and most entertaining of all the series. I laughed out loud several times during the course of my long adventure. It's not the most impressive looking game, but it has its charm. The phenomenal writing and fast, fluid combat will have you focusing on other things anyway.
Tales of Berseria takes everything that is good in the
Tales series and improves on it in wonderful, unexpected ways. It has a very old school feel about it, but that's one of the things I have always loved about the
Tales games. They refuse to conform and continue to always march to their own beat. It certainly earned its spot on this list.
